M8 4-Pin Waterproof Connectors: The Sensor Standard in Sealed Form

The M8 4-pin is the most widely deployed sealed sensor connection in industrial equipment: compact (8mm shell), sealed to IP67 when properly built, and standardized enough that a sensor from any vendor mates a cordset from any other. That standardization makes it the default answer for proximity sensors, photoelectrics, valve connections and compact actuators in washdown and outdoor environments. This guide covers the 4-pin variant specifically.

The 4-Pin A-Coded Pinout

The standard M8 4-pin A-coded arrangement: pin 1 = +V supply (typically 24V DC), pin 2 = load/output, pin 3 = 0V, pin 4 = second output or teach/sense line depending on the device (PNP/NPN variants use pins 2 and 4 differently — the sensor's datasheet owns the truth, and the cordset is wired to the standard positions). Current ratings sit around 2-4A per contact — sensor and light-power class. The A-coding prevents mating with other-function M8 variants; the mechanical keying is the system's mis-wiring defense.

Sealing Construction

IP67 on an M8 4-pin assembly is a chain (our M8 assembly guide details it): the mating interface O-ring, the cable gland seal (cable OD inside the qualified range — the leak point), and the overmold junction on molded cordsets. Factory-overmolded 4-pin cordsets dominate professional applications because the overmold removes the gland's tolerance sensitivity and adds engineered strain relief — for washdown duty, overmolded is the specification, not the upgrade. Our overmolding guide covers the process engineering.

Cable Selection

The 4-pin cordset's cable follows the environment: PUR jacket for oil, chemicals and abrasion (washdown default), fine-strand conductors wherever the assembly flexes with machine movement, UV-stable jackets for outdoor runs, and shielded constructions where the sensor's output is an encoder-class signal (simple PNP/NPN switching outputs don't need shields; incremental encoders do — our sensor cable guide separates the classes). Length discipline: sensor cordsets run short by design; when the distance to the control cabinet exceeds practical cordset lengths, the junction moves to a sealed distribution box with M12-class infrastructure.

Assembly and Verification

Quality practice for M8 4-pin production: 100% electrical test (continuity per the pin map — the 4-pin map is standard, which makes automated verification trivial and excuses none), hipot, and air-leak or immersion verification for waterproof-class builds. Connector seating and lock-torque verification at assembly complete the chain. The discipline is light because the connector is standardized — which is exactly why deviations from standard pinouts or constructions stand out and should be questioned.

Where the 4-Pin Fits — and Its Neighbors

The 4-pin covers the classic sensor-and-actuator connection space. Its neighbors: 3-pin (power + single output, the economy variant), 5-pin (additional functions), and the M12 4/5-pin when currents or mechanical scale exceed M8's class (our M12 guide covers the larger system). Knowing the ladder prevents both under- and over-specifying.
